KODAK 2383 PORTRAITS

CAPTURED HUES: THE KODAK 2383 SERIES
In this portrait series, each composition is enriched with the characteristic warm tones of the Kodak 2383 film stock. Utilizing DaVinci Resolve for color grading, the color palette of each photograph has been meticulously adjusted to achieve visual consistency. The use of natural light and shadow accentuates the models’ features, while the depth of colors and texture details emerge as crucial elements of this technical approach.
My preference for the aesthetic of Kodak 2383 film stock stems from a desire to imbue my photographs with a cinematic touch. The warm tones and soft color transitions offered by this film stock lend a timeless feel to my portraits and draw viewers into a narrative. Recreating this look in the digital realm bridges the gap between the analog past and digital future of contemporary photography, allowing me to articulate my artistic vision. Kodak 2383 is not merely a color palette; it is also an emotional language and a potent tool for the stories I wish to convey through my images.

I opt for regraining in my photography workflow to reintroduce the texture and depth often lost in the digital noise reduction process. This technique is a nod to the classic era of film photography, where grain was an inherent part of the image, adding character and a tactile quality. Regraining helps to bring a more organic and natural feel to the images, which resonates with the viewer on a subliminal level, providing a subtle layer of complexity and richness that enhances the overall visual experience. It's a deliberate choice to counteract the sometimes overly polished look of digital photos and to keep the soul and analog charm in my photographic expression.
I prefer to use halation and glow effects in my photography as part of analog emulation, striving to recreate the warmth and richness of film in a digital format. Halation, with its subtle glow around light sources, emulates the way film naturally reacts to bright lights, adding a layer of realism and depth. The glow effect, on the other hand, mimics the soft light spread seen in older lenses, lending a vintage charm and softness that digital images often lack. Together, these effects are crucial in achieving an authentic film-like aesthetic, bridging the gap between the crisp precision of digital and the organic feel of analog photography.
